The college was founded in the year 1881 and its first premises were at Chandni chowk. It was founded by the Cambridge mission during the British era to promote the English language in India. It was during that time the British wanted to spread English language for their betterment. The college was initially part of Calcutta University. In 1920 it was undertaken by the University of Delhi. The hall of residence is spread in 6 blocks with each block taken care of by a member of the faculty. It was previously allotted to males, but now it has been allotted to females. People who work here in the residence are known as karamcharis.
